Anonymous In America
Graffiti is used as a tool to express oneself, usually to write a name or draw an elaborate mural. Such undertakings are most often done anonymously in the cover of the night. While the artist may take pride in their work, most often the public looks down on its creation. The public may only see bold colors and letters painted on the walls of a building or a train and overlook the message the artist is trying to put forth. The graffiti on this bridge takes a different approach than most. It is not colorful but it is blunt and to the point. What is written, "I will NEVER support a war profiting country," is the opinion of many Americans towards the current administration. Most graffiti holds the views of the few, this graffiti appeals to those opposing the war and this administration, the majority of Americans.
Many people believe the reason Bush attacked Iraq was to profit from their oil. Many of the organizations Bush and Cheney have ties to profit from this war while U.S. taxpayers pay billions to fund the war. This is tax money that should be going elsewhere. The infrastructure of the highways and bridges in the U.S. are in disrepair. This image shows how bridges need funds for repairs, funds that are going to Iraqi roads instead.
The image has a vignette, signifying the tunnel vision of the administration. Bush’s stubbornness and unwillingness to listen to anyone has led this country down a path that only a few are benefiting from. So many people feel alone in today's America; maybe they lost their job, maybe they're losing their home, maybe they just have so much debt and there’s no hope in digging out. The person in the image represents individuals who have been alienated by the endeavor and results of this war. Bush’s war profiting efforts have left millions of people feeling like the writer of this graffiti, Anonymous in America.
I wonder who wrote the graffiti on the bridge, some punk kid who doesn't understand the magnitude of the situation, a fed up passive aggressive homeowner walking by, or a political activist trying to get their views out where ever they can. It doesn't really matter because it holds true for so many people.
